Thanks, Linda. And thanks to Alison and Riku for their thoughts too. I have been a reader on Medium for about 15 months, and finally just started to write and publish in the last few weeks. I guess what I'd love to see from Medium is a thorough explanation of their reasoning for this change. It's clearly a business decision, and as the people who help make their business work, I think we are entitled to an honest explanation. My initial reaction is that they have figured out how to increase their profits while squeezing out the multidudinous little guys (like me) by creating a disincentive to create for Medium. Amazon has done the same thing recently, dropping their affiliate sales commissions from 8% to 3%, putting thousands of small online entrepreneurs out of business overnight. Ebay has done this too, and effectively squeezed out thousands of lower-volume resellers from its marketplace. I get it; business is business. But what was so attractive to me about Medium was the sense that we were all in this together: publishers, large audience writers, and the newbies and little guys like me. This change means that the T&Cs have changed, but more importantly, the culture has changed.
